What is Taekwondo? A Guide to the Korean Martial Art of Self-Defense

Taekwondo, a traditional Korean unarmed martial art, is often practiced as a martial art with a strong emphasis on self-defense. The term 'Taekwondo' is literally translated as 'the art of jumping, kicking or striking with the feet' (tae), 'punching, hitting with the hand or fist' (kwon), and 'the way of' or 'the art of' (Thurs). Taekwondo involves a combination of physical techniques, mental discipline and spiritual development, making it not only an effective method of self-defense, but also a way of life that strives for personal growth and balance.
